Web Engines Decided to finish online advertisement for Gambling
Google and Yahoo, two of the most widely used search engine on the Web, have decided to stop advertising for online gambling, a shift that could thwart the growth of Internet gambling. The movement, who said the companies, will take effect at the end of April, when federal prosecutors are threatening action against American companies doing business with Internet casinos that are based abroad.
Prosecutors started a grand jury investigation last year, issuing subpoenas to American broadcasters, publishers and Web sites to advertise online casinos. Leaders from Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, California, and Google, based in Mountain View, California, refused to say whether they were subjects of the investigation. The fact that each company announced the change in policy on Friday appeared to be a coincidence. Jennifer Stephens, a spokesman for Overture, a Yahoo subsidiary that sells paid sponsored links for Yahoo, said the policy change was the result of a lack of the legal environment regulatory.
Overture also provides advertising links to MSN, the division of access to the Internet to Microsoft. Ms. Stephens said to no longer provide casino advertising to MSN, and MSN confirmed that it would, therefore, stop advertisements.
Ms. Stephens said Yahoo stop running online gambling advertisements on its website of the United States, but continues to run advertising for online casinos on its Web sites published in dozens of countries where Internet casinos are Disclaimer.
Internet gambling advertisements
Google executives, however, said Friday they stop Internet gambling advertisements in all markets. A spokesman for Google, David Krane, said the policy change was part of an effort account the growth of our business and to ensure we provide the best search experience for our users and our advertisers.''
A spokesman for Lycos, another large search engine, also said Friday that the company had decided in recent months to stop the gambling ads, but declined to give details on when the company stopped publishing the ads or why it had taken the decision. Search engine companies, broadcasters and experts who follow the Internet gambling industry said the loss of advertising was not big enough to make a big difference to the profits of broadcasters and American publishers.
But some industry experts said the policy change could have a significant impact on online casinos and their ability to reach customers. ''The Department of Justice is very effective,’ said Sue Schneider, publisher of Interactive Gaming News, an online newsletter focusing on the industry of online gambling. ''It's unfortunate. He does not leave many points casinos to reach American customers. The new policies angered some representatives of the gambling industry who contend the Internet search engine providers were bullied by prosecutors wielding a tested legal theory.
''I urge these search engines and other service providers to stand up for themselves and challenge these pressure by federal prosecutors,’ said David Carruthers, a casino online sports Paris site based in Costa Rica. The site took about 33 million last year Paris people in North America, especially in the United States, the company said. Although operating an online casino is illegal, the laws vary as to whether it is unlawful for a person to place a bet. In New York, for example, it is not a crime to place a wager on the Internet, prosecutors said. Critics of the grand jury investigation, including several legal specialists, said that American companies were within their rights to freedom of expression, to publish advertisements for online casinos, because they were dissemination of information.
Gambling decision panel
A decision by a panel of the World Trade Organization issued on March 24 that the United States' prohibition on casino online violated the free trade obligations.
But companies do not seem eager to test the complicity theory. Several major media companies - including the radio giants Clear Channel Communications and Infinity Broadcasting and Discovery Networks - have recently stopped taking the game online ads. |
